Weekly classes at Island Yoga Vista attract people of all ages who are looking for peace and knowledge as well as health. They appreciate a seasoned teacher and a program that offers them a balanced approach to Yoga. Each class includes breath work, guided imagery, relaxation techniques, Yoga Nidra and meditation. There is a strong and gentle component of yoga postures with a foundation in yoga philosophy.

The aim of this program is to help you experience your life with optimum health, energy and a calm, clear mind.
All classes move with a meditative flow. Each class is structured around a theme and an alignment focus. This careful planning allows students to deeply explore their bodies as well as the philosophy behind yoga. There is a period of meditation as well as a guided relaxation known as Yoga Nidra at the end of the asana practice. The principles underlying the practice are introduced gradually. There is a focus throughout on breath awareness which leads to training in Pranayama. The program is a comprehensive process of health, healing and awakening. This process can help any individual face the daily challenges and stresses of daily life.

Sandra Sagarmurti Shotton brings training in Integrative Yoga Therapy; teacher training from three schools of yoga; indepth studies in Ayurveda; and 20 years of yoga teaching and experience as a Certified Yoga Therapist to your process, and the needs of your body. Yoga Nidra is a simple but powerful technique that has a profound and deeply relaxing effect on the human system. It is scientifically proven to be a preventative and curative tool to counteract psychosomatic diseases, and if practiced regularly, Yoga Nidra, serves as a means for exploring the deep mind and unlocking our spiritual potential. Each Level 1-2 and Level 2 class ends with a practice of Yoga Nidra, followed by a brief period of meditation.
How is it done?
Yoga Nidra is Sanskrit for “Yogic Sleep” and refers to a high state of consciousness. In this practice we lay down comfortably and are guided through body scans and other meditation and visualization techniques. The result is that the body falls asleep and the mind remains awake and conscious. The sleep that we get at night or from a nap is not necessarily relaxing. We can wake up at times feeling more anxious, clenched or stiff then before we fell sleep. Cost for Regular Weekly Classes:
$15.00 per class for a pre-registerd session (or $20 drop-in for one time)
This process requires a commitment to the entire session.
Missed classes can be made up anytime in the session.
Students who wish to attend two or more classes a week pay half price for the 2nd and 3rd class, with the same teacher. (Class size is limited to 8)
Please call ahead if you would like to try one class before committing to the series, cost $20.
Special rates and circumstances can be arranged in advance for seniors, students, those on fixed incomes and families attending together.

Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy (will be offered again )
Yoga and Ayurveda are among the most effective preventive and healing efforts that a person can take.
This program will assist people to live healthy lives. The program provides practical applications of Yoga and Ayurveda that anyone can learn and easily make part of their lives.
A gentle yoga class infused with a thorough understanding of Ayurveda will gradually build flexibility, balance and strength. You will develop determination and enthusiasm to continue. As your goals are met you will see the value in understanding your constitutional needs and how best to work with them.
This program is designed for people who may have limited mobility and may be new to yoga. (arthritis and diabetes are among the most common ailments for which Ayurvedic help is being sought.)
